Answers to Reebok Helmets and Protective Gear Questions

12 Nov 2008

Thanks for all your questions about Reebok Helmets and Protective Gear. Ryan Crelinsten, our Helmet, Face and Protective Product manager has answered as many as possible. Find his answers below:

Question

Lilkartracer asks:
Does the 8K Helmet come with a facemask or is that sold separately?

Answer

Good question. The 8K is sold without a facemask, but the 5K facemask is designed to fit perfectly with all models of Reebok helmets. The 6K and 4K can be bought preassembled with the 5K mask. Regardless of what helmet you choose, your facemask will boast the usual Reebok features that combine comfort and function: Straight bar design, for optimal visibility and protection, ergonomic chin cup and safety strap for fit and hold, and the abrasion-preventing wireguard.

Question

beefstew41092 asks:
I just purchased a RBK 8K gold/yellow helmet and I was wondering if I can purchase royal blue inserts for the silver spots?

Answer

Unfortunately, you have to stick with your subshells. Reebok is obviously focused on putting out the safest helmet possible, and all our products fulfill certification standards. In the 8K, our composite subshell ensures that you’re getting one of the lightest helmets on the market, without jeopardizing the best possible protection. Any change to the structure of the helmet voids its safety certification.

Question

alby-7 asks:
How does the RBK 8K helmet help you from getting serious blows to the head?

Answer

We’d be seriously excited to have developed a helmet that actually prevented you from getting hit- but we haven’t got that far yet. You still have to rely on your 9K Pumps skates to get you out of the way as fast as possible. But, if you have to take a hit, and you might take a few, you want the 8K on your head. It’s got the EPP (expanded polypropylene) liner, which is a lightweight foam molded to the interior of the helmet. It absorbs impact after impact, providing maximum protection. That being said, a helmet doesn’t do much if it doesn’t stay on- and those powerful, jarring checks have the capacity to rattle hard. We designed our chin strap to lock dead center into a secure earloop. The chin strap is kept directly under your chin, and the helmet is held firmly in place.

Question

Floridakid33900 asks:
Hey, I love all your equipment. I own all your equipment, the mid grade line of everything but your helmet and skates, I have your 8K helmet and 9K 2008 Skates. I’m just wondering when you will release the Reebok Pants (Reebok on the pant) and the Reebok Gloves ( Reebok on the glove). Um.... and it’s kinda nerdy to ask but how do you get sponsored by you guys? I know you prob. have to be in the AHL or NHL but how about a High Schooler? JW But Love your stuff!!

Answer

Great to hear you’re a fan of our gear. Come the first half of 2009, you’ll be able to fully outfit yourself -head to toe- in the Reebok logo. Pants and gloves will start making their way into stores by then, so keep your eyes peeled. All levels of hockey are important to Reebok, and with respect to your sponsorship question, there is some special pricing on equipment available to various organizations and teams. Check in with your local hockey shop and ask for details and specifics.

Question

waveplaya33 asks:
Is Reebok going to be making a 9k helmet?

Answer

Looks like the next generation of Reebok helmet is hotly anticipated. We’re always developing new products, improving features, and incorporating innovative technology. Reebok Insiders are the first to find out about all the gear in the pipe-line, so once we have a new helmet- they’ll be the first to know and get the low down.

Our 2009 helmets -with larger logo in front- will hit the market early this coming year.

Question

Emile Taschereau asks:
Is there a big difference between the 6k and the 8k helmets?

Answer

There are 3 key distinctions between the 6K and 8K helmets. The first takes a look inside at the subshell: The 8K has a composite subshell, engineered from the same lightweight material that goes into our sticks. The 6K has an ABS subshell, a high quality polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) material. Both ensure comprehensive lightweight protection, but the composite subshell has actually gone towards making the 8K the lightest helmet on the market.

The second distinguishing feature between the two helmets is the 8K Microdial. The Microdial lets you adjust the width of the helmet, customizing it to your dimensions, and providing a true, personalized 360 degree fit.

The final difference is that the 8K belongs to the Reebok custom program, which lets you match helmet colour to your team colours. Check out our website’s helmet area for the spectrum of colours you can chose from.

What the 6K and 8K do have in common are easy length adjustment with the fitclip, molded EPP liners, and comfort cushions. Both helmets are standouts in protection and comfort.

Question

Antho asks:
quel est la différence entre le casque rbk 4 k et le rbk 6 k merci

Answer The 4K and 6K helmet are separated by two features. The 6K uses our subshell construction, while the 4K does not. While safety is obviously prioritized in all our helmets, the models with subshell construction translate into Reebok helmets being the lightest on the market.

The 4K and 6K also have different liners. The 4K has a dual density Vinyl Nitrile (VN) liner, with a stiffer VN up against the shell for substantial impact absorption, and softer VN providing full comfort up against the head. In comparison, the 6K – like the 8K- has the EPP liner, which is extremely effective against multiple impacts.

Question

ace#10 asks:
If the styrofoam in my helmet is split do i need to replace the helmet?

Answer

Time to get a new lid. It’s very important to replace your helmet immediately if the EPP liner is split. It’s inextricably tied into the overall composition of the helmet, and a key safety component in its construction. When it comes to protecting your head, it’s best to make sure your helmet is in solid condition.

Question

DSilvest asks:
I've wanted to use Reebok elbow, leg and shoulder pads but have always found the straps on all three to be too short for my use. I have a short, muscular build. I realize I could buy extension straps and make it work, but I think it's better to get equipment which fits right out of the box. Any suggestions or comments?

Answer

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Not only does Reebok work hard to ensure that our pads fit the widest range of players as comfortably as possible, we also are always looking to improve their overall adjustability. We will most definitely take your comments into consideration when developing our new products.

Question

pbref asks:
Hi Ryan, I was wondering about the product called the Performance Under One Piece. Does a protective cup come with that or do you have to purchase it separately? It doesn't say if it comes with it. thanks.

Answer

The Performance Under One piece is a great example of super functional performance apparel. Not only is it perfect for managing moisture and providing ultimate breathability, it also includes removable padding for lightweight, flexible cushioning. And yes, a protective cup is included.

Question

kamikazepyro9 asks:
Last Year I ended up getting surgery due to a cross-check that ended up stretching my shoulder capsule by about 5 inches. We think that one reason this happened is because my shoulderpads were not fitted correctly, What’s the best way to know the correct size of pads to buy? And how do you know that your pads are protecting you completely?

Answer

It’s definitely essential to have your protective equipment fit properly. When you’re making a purchase, it’s obviously important to try the pads on and make sure they sit correctly. While most fitting guidelines are based on height, it makes sense to try on multiple Reebok models and sizes to find out what fits your body best. For shoulder pads specifically, make sure that your shoulder sits directly in the middle of the shoulder cap. The staff at your local hockey shop will help consult on what’s working on your body, and which gear is going to protect you effectively.

Question

joel asks:
Quel est le poids de la culotte 9K versus 7K?

Answer

The 9K is a true pro pant, and outweighs the 7K by a couple hundred grams. Providing a high level of protection, combined with exceptional freedom of movement, the 9K has extra protection in the shell at the back of the leg, and thigh guards that sit independent of the core, allowing an entirely adjustable, personalize fit. With weight strategically dispersed closer to the body, the 9K feels lighter on, and cuts down on fatigue.

The 7K shares in a number of features with the performance-enhancing 9K: Joint-shielding hip caps, molded spinal protector, as well as stretch and ventilation technology. The 7K is fully customizable, promising a full range of motion and serious protection.

is there anyway to change the color of the subshell in the 6k helmet?

  • Posted by bigreds4 on September 15, 2009 at 6:08 p.m.

with the 8k helmet instead of having simple colors you should create a sweet one. i think the you should have a black shell with red inserts. that would be so sweet for my team colors or have a red shell with black inserts. im telling you these two helmets would fly off the shelves.

I purchased an 8k Fitlite helmet, and an Itech X100 Half Visor, and they don't seem to work well together. Is there a kit, or something that would help them fit better?

    Thanks.

There has been much talk about concussions lately and the use of helmets and mouth guards. I’ve recently read many posts in hockey forums and bolgs and it is very apparent that this is a mainstream concern for hockey parents. Cascade has recently come out with an improved helmet, but I’m not seeing the science and testing that supports their claims. The folks at Riddell have made some great strides in football helmets and they have the statistics to prove it.

I think this is a great opportunity to produce a product what the market demands. I’m also confident that if you have the science to back it you will have the best selling helmet on the market and build consumer confidence in the brand. Let me know your thoughts.

My daughter wears a RBK 6 helmet for figure skating and at the end of her lesson the coach puts a sticker on the helmet as a reward. Does this void the warranty? Does it affect the protection of the helmet?

Is it possible to get a Reebok 8K or 11K helmet in a gold color like Notre Dame for a team order?
