Answers to Reebok Stick Questions

19 Sep 2008

Thanks for all your questions about Reebok Sticks . Olivier Camet, our Sticks Product Manager has answered as many as possible. Find his answers below:

Question

beaner asks:
Are composite sticks that great for young players?

Answer

Interesting question. It really depends on the age and skill level of the player. A young Novice in house league probably doesn’t need a high-end performance composite stick. But, by the time players are 9-10 years old, they could start seeing the benefits to their game and development in using a true performance stick.

Question

sw2001 asks:
Hi, can you please tell me when the new Reebok O stick will be available for sale to the public? I saw Patrice Bergeron using it during the Bruins Development camp and it looked really nice. I called Reebok and they confirmed it was the new O stick and it should be available shortly, but they didn't have a date. Also, when is the new 10k stick going to be available? I've seen some pictures on the web of it and it looked pretty interesting.

Answer

You’ve got it right- the latest Reebok sticks are both nice and interesting. Not such a long wait until you can get your hands on them either. Both the new Reebok 8.0.8 O-Stick and 10k with SicKick II Technology will be available sometime in 2009. Until then, you have the choice between the power of the 9K or explosive kick of the 7K.

Question

Sammylee asks:
'lo I’m playing the 5k shaft with the 5k blade is their a difference to the one piece 5k stick or is it the same?

thank´s a lot from austria

Answer

You’re working with the same shaft and blade. But there is a reason the one-piece stick we build in our factory will benefit your game. The streamline design of a one-piece means you’re getting the most efficient energy transfer when connecting with the puck. Consequently, you’re getting the best possible performance out of your stick.

Question

crosbyfan787 asks:
I practice shooting in all my spare time, do you have any tips on how to shoot higher and more accurate?

Answer

Yes. Keep practicing. And also make sure you’re using the right stick with the right curve. If a stick is too stiff for you, you’re not maximizing your potential for precision or control.

Question

bellycrawl asks:
What’s the correct procedure for shortening my stick?

Answer

Even though it might seem a simple procedure, I always recommend having your stick shortened by a professional. Check out your local pro shop for the best results. They’ll have all the specialized tools to make sure your stick gets the VIP treatment.

Question

aviators97 asks:
How does the o stick give better accuracy?

Answer

The O-Stick delivers superior accuracy through its unique design and Power Ports architecture. The Power Ports are constructed from two mirroring arches that allow air flow through the shaft, limiting stick deformation and reducing rotation and torque. This enhances overall stability, and in turn, levels the blade, lets it sit straighter- and has you shooting with greater accuracy.

Question

RBK15786 asks:
I use a 77 flex Nike Bauer stick. I am thinking about buying an O-stick, but I don't know what RBK flex to get if I want a similar flex to my Nike Bauer stick because it says regular, mid, and stiff.

Answer

In Reebok sticks, what you would be looking at is our mid flex, which is a 75. I’d recommend getting the O-Stick with that particular flex. Your game will thank you.

Question

silverfoxjr asks:
I never made a change of a blade, I need instruction on how to do the change. My shaft is Aluminum + carbon. Thank you very much

Answer:

Again, I’d strongly refer you to you friendly local pro shop. Obviously, blade fit is a key component in the performance of your stick. Your best bet is to have it taken care of by an expert with the whole kit of knowledge and tools. Usually, if you buy a blade at their establishment, pro shops won’t charge for the service of a blade change.

Question

ducks25 asks:
Is the 9K O-stick very durable?

Answer

The 9K O-Stick might have holes in it- by way of the Power Port aerodynamic design- but it’s entirely solid. The O-Stick promises increased power for every shot, with a low kick point for accelerating speed, which drives a stronger blade face into harder contact with the puck. As a super elite performance stick, the O-Stick is extremely durable. It’s also a pro favorite- and there’s nothing more rigorous then NHL play.

Question

shaun asks:
How do I determine what flex of stick is right for me?

Answer

Excellent question. You want the ideal stick as it relates to your height, weight and strength. Too many players are still using the wrong flex, and needlessly limiting their game as a consequence. If you’re a senior player but under 6’ feet tall, weighing less than 180 pounds, you should be using a mid flex. If you’re taller, I’d recommend using a regular flex. The stiff flex should be reserved for players who are taller or larger than average. To get more insight and some hands-on advice about the right flex, it’s a good idea to visit your local pro shop. They’ll help determine which stick you should be using.

Question

EA asks:
Pro's consider flexibility or stiffness of the stick, curve or lie of the blade. How many options are there, and what should a player look for when buying a stick? Also, what is the proper length a stick should be cut for optimal performance (shooting, stick handling)? Thank you.

Answer

All good questions. Reebok engineers its sticks in a variety of flex patterns (stiffness), curve options and lengths. It comes down to selecting the right stick depending on your height, weight, position (defense or forward) and style of play. With regards to flex, check out the answer to the question above for some further guidance. With blade curve, if you don’t know which you prefer, you might want to test a couple options, and pin point what works best for your needs and skill level. The right combination of flex and blade curve will improve accuracy of passing, puck control, and overall consistency of your play. As far as the correct stick length, the industry standard is that the stick come up to your chin while in your skates.

For the person that asked if composite sticks are good for young players. My son started playing with a 7K sickkick at 9 years old, and I couldn't believe the difference in his shot. I find that the flex as well as specifically that Datsyuk curve has allowed him to have a very strong shot that can be fired along the ice or roofed on his command. I would strongly recommend it.

Ok, for anyone trying to determine stick flex, the recommendations given to Shaun above are a little too generic. Your mechanics, as well as your shot preference, are just as essential factors as your hieght and wieght. Too much flex is just as detrimental to your accuracy if not more so than a stick that is too stiff. Players that put alot of into their shots and have good wieght transfer thru their shot should use a slightly stiffer stick to reduce excess tourqe and get all of that energy into their shot (defenseman with booming slapshots will atest to this). Players that focus more on quick release shots, espacially in tight situations deep in the slot, and don't lean into their shots as often will conversly need a lighter flex. Since they are not putting alot of force into the shot, they will need a shaft that flexs readily with minimal effort to amplify the velocity of the shot. The important thing is that unless you have the money to but a slew of sticks and try them for yourself, you should definatly consult with a product expert before making a purchase. Hopefully your local dealers are up to date with their product knowledge.
