Answers to Reebok Goalie Gear

22 Jan 2009

Happy New Year! Thanks for all your questions about Reebok goalie gear. Former NHL goalie and Reebok Hockey Business Unit Director, JC Bergeron, has answered as many as possible. Find his answers below:

Question

rihan18 asks:
what r the goalie masks like ?? im getting a new mask soon and i want to know which is better.. a rbk premier mask or a itech nv7?

Answer

The Reebok line of goalie masks offer some very unique features that really set us apart. First, on our 7k and 9k masks we have a ½ and ½ liner, which is a thin layer of EPP (expanded polypropylene) foam covered with soft, pro style VN (vinyl nitrile) foam. This liner combines the lightweight protection of EPP with the comfort of VN. We also have our quick snap adjustment system that has all the adjustment on the backplate. This means there are no clips on the top part of the shell, so you have more room for a great paint job and they are much less likely to break. Lastly, we have our pro-style chin sling. The design is very similar to what pro players actually wear, instead of having a big bulky chin cup.

Question

Noseman asks:

I recently purchased a Premier II Chest and Arm protector and it seems really bulky compared to what I am used to and compared to what it looks like the pros are wearing. Is this the Chest protector that you would see most goaltenders wearing in the pros? Also, is size 60 the largest jersey Rbk makes in it's authentic jersey line? Does Rbk also make a goalie cut in this line? The dimensions that I have seen seem as if they would be quite tight with the Premier II chest protector.

Answer

The Premier II Arm and Body is indeed the protector rocked by the pros. The feeling of bulkiness could be attributed to a couple of things: The size might be a bit big for you, and if that’s the case, you can adjust the arms or tuck it into your pants. This will pull it ‘closer’ to your body, and improve the fit. Adjustment systems for the body and spine should also help you get that customized feel, and tighten straps on the shoulder to make sure floaters don’t rise above your head. Also, once you break the protector in, it will start molding to your body. The P2, while engineered to deliver lightweight maximum protection, does fit ‘bigger’ on your body than other Reebok Arm and Body series. The Xpulse, and especially the Xpulse Pro Spec are meant to fit a bit tighter with a multi-flex design.

As for your jersey, yes you can find a goalie cut in the Reebok Platinum Shield. Like the player jerseys, it features the durable, comfort of Reebook’s Playdry moisture management technology.

Question

warren asks:

I am 6 feet tall, and i don't know what size my goalie pads should be.

Answer

In choosing the right goalie pads, you want to consider your skill level, and most importantly the measurement between your ankle to knee. I’d generally recommend that if you’re 6 feet, you should be looking at 34” or 35” pads. That said- I do see kids using 34”+ 2 or 35” + 1. Best bet is head to your nearest pro dealer and get their help. Optimal fit means your taking full advantage of the lightweight, balance control and protection of our goalie pads.

Question

Goallegend39 asks:

Hi. Recently I've been seeing the NHL goalies wearing the Premier III Pads. Why aren't these pads open to the public yet, and if they are, where can I buy some?

Answer

The Premier III pads are worthy of being coveted, and we understand your anxious to get your hands on them. You should be seeing the second round of production hitting the stores around mid-march. Select dealers in Canada and the US are already carrying P3 stock, but the public only has a couple more months to wait before they have full access. There’s great new features on this next series of goalie equipment, including square top inside roll on the pads, and innovative design changes on the glove- definitely worth the wait.

Question

The Caveman asks:

Does it help much that the P3 glove doesn't have a break at the wrist???

Answer

We’re always trying to help your game by improving our gear and looking at the latest technology. Yes the Premier III Pro Catch glove has been re-conceived, so it has a one-piece thumb and cuff- cutting out the break in the wrist. How does this impact your performance? It increases durability and coverage, and enhances power. We’ve also tweaked the angle of the glove to give you more mobility. And of course the P3 glove maintains all the key features of the P2; game ready fit with pre-flexed palm, reinforced T-pocket, and secure, customized support with triple hand and wrist adjustment.

Question

Goaliekid asks:

Are the new p3 pads much better than the p2 pads?

Answer

When we embark on developing new products for Reebok Hockey, top of mind is advancing the player experience with our gear. So to answer your question, Premier III goalie pads are the next step up. As I’ve mentioned in some answers above, we’ve enhanced our pads and redesigned our glove. In addition, there’s a new grip palm on the blocker for better puck control, and the goalie stick has been made even more lightweight, durable, balanced with increased impact absorption. All Reebok goalie equipment is functionally superior, but we’re committed to keep pushing the envelope for players who love our gear.

Question

tank asks:

hi what if any weight difference in the prem.series goalie pad and the 8k int?

Answer

Interesting questions. The Premier II Int Pro goalie pads are about a half-pound lighter per pad than the 8K Int. size. Both provide maximum butterfly support, are constructed from a lightweight core for paramount balance, and feature the pre-curved flat face design for serious rebound control. Triple knee raiser and anatomical calf design guarantee a customized fit and a range of movement keeping you on top of all shots.

Question

greyhoundsgoalie asks:

how many leg straps does the 8k turco break leg pad have???

Answer

We can’t promise that wearing the 8K Turco “Break In” leg pad will have you playing exactly like the Dallas Stars netminder and Reebok team member, Marty Turco. But console yourself with the fact that you’re game will benefit from the superior durability, support and fit that the Turco pads deliver. Like the regular 8K, the Turco Break In leg pad has 5 straps.

Question

goalie001 asks:

I need new pads. What brand would you say is the best?

Answer

Love fielding easy questions. May I humbly suggest you get Reebok goalie pads? They are in fact the best. Molded EPP interior for light but durable protection, pre-formed boot channel for streamlined fit, adjustable straps, rebound control in the flat-face pre-curve design, plus the all-essential balance and butterfly support. Whether it’s the Premier or the Xpulse series, make a mission to your local pro shop to find your perfect set of Reebok pads.

Question

Vinny37 asks:

I have seen the new premier III goalie stick and I was just wondering if there was any way I could customize them? If so, how many would I have to order and what would the price range be? thanks.

Answer

Unfortunately, you can’t dude up your Premier III with your own pattern. However, we have implemented a colourway program open to dealers in Canada and the US. This means there’s a substantial range of special colors to choose from. Thankfully, the P3’s full carbon fiber design, woven wrap handle, consistent flex and unparalleled impact absorption- look good in any colour.

Question

JVM30 asks:

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET A NEW CATCHING GLOVE TO BE MORE FLEXIBLE, IT IS A RBK 6K JR

Answer

You’ve got to work that glove. Use it on a daily basis, both on the ice and dry land. Even at home, soften up the glove by wearing it, and massage out the stiffness. Practice makes perfect- whether you’re in your skates or not.

Question

flop asks:

I'm 12 and in my first year of hockey, what would be a good but cheap pads, blocker, glove for me?

Answer

Check out the Premier II 6K, either Junior or Youth depending on your size. These will make sure you stay protected as you learn the game, while maintaining mobility and movement. It will also help you master your balance and stick your butterfly.

Question

wahiaronkwas asks:

The rbk chest protectors for goalies, I have the yellow and black one, i like it a lot, but i think im ready for a new one. which one is the best one to get?

Answer

Your can hook yourself up with the Premier II protector, with its lighter weight, increased shoulder protection, and improved spine and body fit. P2 maintains balance and mobility while giving you the optimum protection. If you can hold out until the spring, you have another option in the new Pro Spec, which should be in stores by April.

OK I need some information on this chest protector. The Reebok Pro Spec SR PRO Arm & Body Chest Protector looks like they have redesigned the chest protector here and it looks great but I need to know if it is going to act differently then the RBK 6K black and green chest protector. I found that in a large the arms were too long and my mobility was terrible. With this chest protector are the arms shorter and how is mobility? I have found places where I can buy this unit but I need as much info as possible first.

In 5'10 145 pounds, what size chest protector do you think I should purchase?

  • Posted by DCarausu on September 27, 2009 at 11:31 p.m.

I would like to suggest a new pattern for your Pro Knee Protectors' line that incorporates the unit as a single one-piece combination of the pad/protector and a full pant undergarment (such as an Under Armor pant or the RBK5734 pant, but tight fit). I think most goalies that use the knee protector system have run into the same problem of the [strapped system] knee pad(s) shifting during play and not being properly secured [possibly causing injury]. I believe a 1 piece unit will increase stability, protection and ease of equipment-fitment for the goalie using such a pad. Thank you.

i am 15 years old and am 5'2". my floor to knee measurement is 18.5 inches. But on the customization page for revoke pads, for size, the sizing popup says that with an 18.5 inch floor to knee, the goalie's height should be 5'8". Am i doing something wrong measuring, or is that sizing just a general approximation.
