Good Skaters

27 Aug 2010

It drives me nuts to see so many kids struggling with their skating ability only because they have the wrong size of skates.
For all you extreme parents who dream of having a child make the NHL or go to the Olympics, and for those parents who just want your child to have fun, Please! Please! Please!!! Make sure they have the right size skates. Kids struggle with skates that are not fitted properly.

Parents, try walking with flippers, which is what it is like for a kid to skate with oversized skates.

Fitting is simple to figure out. Skates fit 1 1/2 size smaller than a standard shoe. A size 3 shoe is really a size 1 1/2.
Don’t ask me why, it has always been that way. Take out the footbed and place your Childs foot on it cupping the heel.
For the growing foot, (age 4 to 15) There should be about 1/4 inch space from the toe to the end of the footbed.

If money is a concern, you are better off with a lower priced pair than an oversized Premium skate.

Season is starting soon, can’t wait, see you at the rink.

Place child’s foot on the footbed. Be sure that the heel cups the heel form on this footbed.

This fit with over an inch at the toe is a common fitting error.

An ideal fit for a growing child will have up to 1/4 inch or 4 to 5 mm space from the end of the toe to the end of the footbed

Additional tips:

  • Placing a finger at the back of the skate is not a valid test for skate sizing.
  • Each ½ size is 4mm in length.
  • Skates fit 1 to 1 ½ larger than shoe. Example, size 7 shoe is a 5 ½ Reebok skate.
  • Girls shoes are 2 to 2 ½ larger that shoes. Example, size 7 girls shoe is a 4 ½ skate.
  • Remember, if you use the shoe size as a guide, the child may have shoes that they are growing into and may be too big.
  • Remember, the best skate is the one that fits the best.

Sizing is only but one element. If the last is not in conformation with the foot, all is lost right there and must be openly acknowledged by both retailer and buyer.
Then there is the stiffness factor that is overlooked far too often. Many individuals are simply on within too stiff a boot which does not allow for appropriate flexing as per weight (mass) and leverage (height). Yet so many think that stiffer is better when just the opposite is many times much more true and clearly beneficial.
Notwithstanding too large a size, especially for youth........., being fixated on brand solely for the sake of brand and thus-in-turn buying the wrong brand based on an ill fitting last and then making matters worse via too stiff a boot is one of the single greatest setbacks going on today..........

My kid has the Reebok expandable skates. I was skeptical at first but when his foot grew it was nice to just turn the crank.

As a mite coach I've found a bigger issue is kids not having their skates properly tied. Every practice I see at least 1 kid with loose skates. They're the right size, just not pulled tight enough.

The Reebok ext(extendable) skate is not a good skate/solution for kids serious about learning and playing. At the beginning the skate blade and boot is 3 sizes too big(toe cap is the adjusting part). When the player tries to step over and such, it is like wearing clown shoes for them. It is like using a skate with too much room or a stick too long, only hinders and slows their development.

I got the size down but how do you measure the skate width? I purchased a pair of CCM in a D width only to find out they are too narrow. Is Reebok D wider than a CCM or do I need to jump to a EE, or is that too wide. Any help would be great.

Good points here ... I think parents buy biger size because they want to save money for the next year IMO.
