Montreal, Quebec, Canada (April 15, 2008) - The Boston College Eagles knocked off the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4-1 in the Frozen Four Final to take the NCAA Division 1 Title on Saturday night. The game was played in front of a sold out crowd at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado and was televised nationally across the U.S. on ESPN. It was the Eagles third national title as they captured the championship previously in 1949 and 2001.
Reebok Hockey is a proud partner to both the Boston College and Notre Dame Hockey teams and is the exclusive equipment supplier for both squads in the following categories: uniform, gloves, pants, and helmets. The Eagles have been equipped with Reebok Hockey products since the launch of the brand in 2004-2005.
Boston College was not in unfamiliar territory in the final–having come up short in a head-to-head battle with Michigan State in last years Championship game. It was Boston College’s eighth Frozen Four appearance in the past 11 years and they join Lake Superior State and Minnesota as the only teams to play in three consecutive title games.
Notre Dame’s trip to the finals was no easy task as they had to defeat the heavily favored New Hampshire Wildcats in the West Regional. They then went on to knock off the defending National Champion Michigan State Spartans in the Frozen Four semifinals on route to their first Championship game in the University’s history.
The Frozen Four is the trademarked name of the final two rounds of the NCAA Division I championship of ice hockey in the USA. Schools advance in a single-elimination tournament from four regional sites to a single site, where the national semifinals and final game are played. The NCAA started a Women’s Frozen Four beginning in the 2000-01 season. The term is derived from the term “final four”, indicating the four teams remaining in a single-elimination tournament.
